Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Andrew Drawbaugh spent his early childhood in Seattle, Washington. After his parents divorced, he moved with his mother and older brother to Atlanta, Georgia. Andrew returned to Seattle after high school. He studied black and white photography at The Photographic Center Northwest for five years before discovering Black Lab Gallery, a rental darkroom space tucked inside a photography school and art gallery. He made prints there for several years. Once digital cameras and printers became affordable, he abandoned traditional printing techniques and turned to a style of photographic collage in which he combines found analog photographs with his own digital images. He has refined this technique and now works to create collages that communicate a sense of narrative, as though each completed collage is an individual photograph of an interrupted drama. The viewer becomes the photographer and the photograph becomes the view.
